Caffèdex FAQ
Short answers to the questions people ask most. If yours is not here, the Contact page at /contact is the quickest way to get one.
Why do I have to give my date of birth?
Our sign-up service asks every new account for a date of birth, and accounts are available from the age of 13. It is stored with your account details and is removed when you close the account. You do not need an account, or to give a date of birth, to read public reviews.
What is the difference between a draft, a private and a public review?
Every review has a state. A draft is unfinished and visible only to you. A private review is complete and still visible only to you. A public review is one you have chosen to share: it appears on the community reviews page and gets its own page that anyone can open, with or without an account.
New reviews start as drafts. Nothing is shared until you set the state to public yourself.
Can I make a public review private again?
Yes. Open the review, edit it, change the state back to private or draft and save. It then drops out of the community view. If you need a review removed entirely, contact us via /contact with a link to it.
Can I edit a review after I have saved it?
Yes. Every field can be changed after saving: the rating, the sliders, the tasting notes, the price, the photo and the rest. The date field is yours to set as well, so a review logged a week late can still carry the day you actually had the coffee.
What do the rating and the acidity and body sliders mean?
The rating is a score out of five, shown as coffee bean icons. It is your overall verdict on the coffee and nothing more precise than that; use whatever scale is consistent for you.
The two sliders are separate from the rating. Acidity runs from Low to High and records how bright or tangy the coffee tastes. Body runs from Light to Full and records how heavy it feels in the mouth. Both run from 0 to 100 and start in the middle at 50. They describe the coffee, not how good it is: a bright, light Kenyan filter and a heavy, mellow Sumatran espresso can both be five-bean coffees at opposite ends of the sliders.
Which categories, roasts and brew methods can I choose from?
Categories: Espresso, Americano, Flat White, Latte, Cappuccino, Cortado, Macchiato, Mocha, Filter / Pour-over, Cold Brew, Beans and Other. The category box is searchable, so start typing. If nothing fits, you can leave it blank.
Roasts: Light, Medium, Medium-dark and Dark. Brew methods: Espresso machine, V60, AeroPress, French press, Moka pot, Chemex, Cold brew and Other. Origin is free text, so write the country, region or farm as the bag or menu gives it, such as Ethiopia, Yirgacheffe.

Can other members see who wrote a public review?
A public review page shows the coffee, not you: the title, roaster or café, category, origin, roast, brew method, rating, tasting notes, acidity, body, date, location, price and photo. Your email address is never displayed. If you choose an optional screenname in your profile, that is the only name that may appear alongside your contributions; if you do not, your public identity defaults to anonymous or a system-generated label.
How do I report a review?
Use the Report function on the review itself, or write to us via /contact. Include a link to or the identifier of the content and a short reason. We acknowledge valid reports without undue delay and may remove the content, restrict the account that posted it, or take no action. Repeated unfounded reports can lead to restrictions on the reporting account.
Do I need an account to read community reviews?
No. The community reviews page and each public review page are open to anyone. You need an account to write reviews, to keep private ones, and to share your own with the community.
What cookies does Caffèdex use, and why are there adverts?
Strictly necessary cookies and browser storage keep you logged in, protect the site and remember your preferences and privacy choices; they do not need consent.
Adverts are served by Google AdSense. Google and other third-party vendors use cookies to serve ads based on your visits to this and other websites. If you are in the UK, the EEA or Switzerland, Google's consent message asks for your choice first; without consent you may still see adverts, but they are not personalised to you. You can change or withdraw your choice at any time with the cookie button in the footer. You can turn off personalised advertising from Google at any time in Ads Settings (adssettings.google.com), and opt out of some other vendors at www.aboutads.info or www.youronlinechoices.eu.
We do not use analytics cookies today. If we introduce Google Analytics, it will only run after you consent. Adverts are how the site is funded; voluntary donations and affiliate links are planned, and the privacy policy explains how each will work.
How do I close my account, and what happens to my reviews?
You can close your account at any time from your account settings. Your email address, screenname and date of birth are then permanently removed, normally within 30 days. Reviews and ratings you contributed may be kept in anonymised form so the community index stays intact; once anonymised they can no longer be linked back to you. The full detail is in the Privacy Policy.
What if I do not fill in every field?
Only the roaster or café, title, state and date are required. Everything else is optional. Where a field is empty, the review card shows a placeholder: origin, brew method, price and rating display as a dash, location shows as not specified, and if you leave the tasting notes blank the card fills the space with a light-hearted stock comment based on your rating. A photo is optional too; without one the card shows a standard image for the category.
